Skinny People

Skinny People

This article was brought on by a conversation that I had with one of my clients whom I have trained for at least 3 years. She has struggled with her weight off and on for many years, trying many crash diets and countless hours of exhausting exercise. Lately I have noticed a great change however in her perseverance and dedication to her weight loss goal and I think it is because of her new found enlightenment.

She told me for the longest time she had thought that skinny people were just naturally skinny whether it was genetics or good metabolism, she felt that skinny people didn’t have to work in order to keep there physique. Her realization was that most skinny people, with the exception of certain blessed individuals, actually have to work everyday in order to maintain there current body status.

This is absolutely true! If you are currently having a problem with maintaining a healthy weight, you may need help in one of these various areas; you need to control your portions, you are making poor food choices, or you need to move more.

If you are having an issue with portion control, I will offer a few suggestions that may help you. You need to be aware of how much food you are putting in your body. One way of measuring portions without having to use a measuring cup or scale is to use your hand. One cup is around the same size as your fist, 3 ounces is roughly the same size ( thickness and width) of your palm and lastly 1 tablespoon can be compared to the size of your thumb. When you have your dinner plate in front of you make sure that none of your food is touching and that your meat portion is roughly the size of your palm, your carbohydrate whether it be rice or pasta is about the size of your fist and any fattier condiments (butter, mayonnaise, salad dressings) are the size of your thumb. The great thing about this portion control thing is that you can have as much of those green and bright colored vegetables as you want! Another great way to help with portion control is to chose items that are prepackaged out such as frozen healthy meals, portioned out oatmeal, anything that is pre-portioned out for you so that you know when you are done with it you need to be finished eating.

Calorie awareness also tends to be a big issue. With our website membership we offer online nutritional logging that gives you a discretionary guideline for how many calories you should be taking in daily. Everyone requires a certain amount of calories throughout the day in order to maintain a healthy weight. The problem is that many of us have no idea what that number is and tend to over consume calories which inevitably leads to weight gain. Therefore, it is very important to be aware of this number and to regulate it.

Lastly, we all need to move more! Movement burns calories, whether you are taking a walk at the park, weight training at the gym, washing your car, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Movement will allow you to burn off extra calories and if done properly will promote weight loss.

It is important to understand, if you are unhappy with your weight, that there is a skinny person inside of you! It does take portion control, calorie awareness and more movement. With the tools that we offer at The Fit Style, you can rest assure that you have what you need to get to your goal and to be the person that you have always wanted to be. So stay motivated and be thankful that today you have chosen to make fitness your lifestyle!
