Why Change is good
Did you know the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Interesting to think about for a lot of things but especially in your workouts. Your body is smart. It is designed to find the path of least resistance. It will find a way to become more efficient and expend less energy. Think about a marathon runner. Their body has adapted to the workload. That’s how we progress. Now, what if we quit challenging ourselves. What if we keep doing the same thing over and over. How can we be expected to become better if we don’t evolve?
You will see with all FitStyle workouts that we run on 4 week cycles. There is a method to madness. The body starts to figure out the path of least resistance between weeks 4 and 6. We want optimal performance so we tend to be on the 4 week side to not give the body any more time than it needs. On the other side of the coin consistency of work is important to develop the connection between the body and the motions it is creating. Thus at least 4 weeks of each program. Sounds complicated doesn’t it. Leave the details to us and remember this easy guide. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being sitting on the couch and 10 being the hardest thing you’ve even physically achieved, where would you rate your workout. You should always be pushing yourself so aim for a 5 or 6.
This constant state of perceived exertion is how we determine the intensity of the workouts and how much heavier to make the weights on each set. Your level 6 is your level 6. It doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing or how heavy they are lifting because they cant get in shape for you. You have to do it and you have to work hard for it. Use this scale during your workout and during sets. If you are using 20 lb dumbells and you easily completed your set and would give it a 4 effort then you need to increase your weight to a 25 or 30 pound set of dumbells to you are working at a 6. If you grabbed 65s and only get 3 reps and your workout says 12 reps, drop down to 55s and keep going till you get all your reps.
Remember that you are only cheating yourself when you don’t work as hard as you could. No one is asking you to tear your own arms off or anything but pride yourself in the work you achieve everyday . There are very few times in our adult lives where we are challenged to do more and become better. Consider this your challenge. Work hard, have fun and thank you for making fitness your lifestyle!
